I approached my boss and asked about the training. It turns out that HE is going to the basic delineation training. 
He expressed to me that he is humiliated to take this course and that he tried to convince his boss that he should not have to take it. Apparently his boss thinks that it's best for the manager to have the training, even though I'm the only one without it. My boss said that the only way I could appeal to his boss was to present some form of benefit to the company in taking this training. Fortunately, I blogged here first and had already anticipated this.
I told him that the company would benefit because proposals would have an additional resume with training certified. He reminded me that we don't win proposals from ecology, we get the hand-me-downs (infrastructure projects that need environmental permitting). So then I said that it would be much cheaper to pay for me to take the training (my boss makes about double my salary, as best I can estimate). He reminded me that it's not about cost, it's about "billability" (consulting is such a weird biz).
So my two main arguments were flattened.
Nonetheless, I expressed my concern and openly admitted my frustration. My boss replied well. He prefaced that he was not justifying, and then told me that he had been begging for training for the 6 years he's been there. He's been to *one* training class.
So, basically, I can't expect my company to further my development, professionally. I have a very tough decision to make, at a very tough time....

| | Good for you for talking about the situation with your boss. At least you've expressed your concerns, but it sounds like there's a very slim/next to no chance that you'll get that training. Maybe it's time to find an employer who values their staff and is willing to provide the necessary training and career development opportunities to bright young employees. It's a tough decision, but you need to be well equipped to do your job, and you need to be happy and supported and valued. Sometimes we need step out of our comfort zones and take risks. You might find something so much better than what you've got. ![]() |
